How Do Counselors
Help My Child?
The role
of the school counselor is to be a child advocate. We are in school
to assist students with personal, social and academic concerns they
might have that inhibit their ability to reach their full potential.
When students are upset and having problems, we are here to listen
and help students find solutions. We want our students to learn to
problem solve, but sometimes the best solution for middle school
students is to get a responsible adult involved. We encourage the
students to talk to us when they have a concern. A student learning
to seek help is an important life skill. We want our students to
know that there are resources to help them. Parents are also
encouraged to keep us informed.
Frequently Asked
Questions
Do School Counselors provide therapy? No, school
counselors, due to time limitations and case load, only do short
term counseling. Students who need long term interventions are
encouraged to seek therapists in our community.
Do School
Counselors consult with parents? ABSOLUTELY! We
encourage parents to contact us with their concerns so that we can
work together to help their children reach their potential.
What is the
role of the School Counselor in relation to parents and teachers?
The school counselor’s job is to facilitate information and
communication. The classroom teacher is always your primary
resource regarding school work. However, the counselor
participates in parent-teacher conferences, suggests interventions,
serves as a resource, and provides referrals to other community
agencies.
