Word of the Week
MESSAGE FROM MR. DEVALL
Martin Middle School would like
to extend a helping hand to assist those affected by
the earthquake in China. Wayne Wu, an outstanding
student at MMS, along with the faculty and staff are
asking for your support as we collect donations for
the China Earthquake Relief Fund. Wayne was touched
by a story of a teacher named Tang Hong who held one
of his students in his arms and had sheltered several
others with his body when rescuers found him in the
rubble. The lives of the students he thus protected
were saved, but not his. The young teacher in his
twenties may have escaped the tragedy because his
classroom was on the ground floor. But he and six
colleagues were confirmed dead at the Hongbai Town
Central School. The earthquake was one of the worst
in history and has registered 3,000 deaths. Among the
dead, fourteen year old Feng Peipei had called her
mother several days before the earthquake promising to
bring her a gift for Mother’s Day and her birthday.
All the mother received was news of her daughter’s
death. At least 500 of the total 732 students at the
school were buried and it is estimated that only 100
could survive. Please make donations payable to
China Earthquake Relief Fund.
Donations can be brought to Martin Middle School or
mailed directly to:
